"It was stupid and reckless to climb the mountain pass in a blizzard and take on the elemental, Old Chitral, by myself, but I wouldn't call it a mistake. I won the Dominion Jewel and presented it to Jonathan. With it, he secured his throne and repaired the very ground beneath our feet when Roger attempted to ruin us all."

She chews on her lip.

"Not saving Francis from the Sweating Fever when I had all the power to do so was my stupidest mistake and greatest regret, but his death was no best possible outcome. Unless one considers that it made me determined not to make the same mistake with Jon."

There's a long pause.

"With that in mind, I have to say bringing my brother back to life. I shouldn't have done it. It was stupid, and the Gods might yet punish me further." Firmly: "But he's alive, and that I would not change."

Grace takes a long drag on her cigarette, tapping a finger on the table and nodding as if to say: Sure. I see what you're doing.

"There was this case. B&E, multiple homicide over in Eastside. It was a family with a teenage boy, dog." She shakes her head. "It got to me, you know? After everyone left, I stayed. I looked through photo albums, poured some whiskey into a half-empty pitcher of iced tea, played tapes. Fell asleep on their couch, reading the dad's old travel diary. Something woke me up. A picture fell off the wall. No -- it was knocked off. Had to have been. Behind it was a loose board. Behind the board was a letter that helped me catch the killer."

She grins.

"Nah. That'd be too easy. But I swear I saw a woman-shaped shadow standing there, still as anything. I stared until it vanished. Just... gone.

"Nothing another drink couldn't fix."
