To Doctor Evil,

Did you have to complete an evil residency? And on a similar note, for those of us who have discovered medical school is not for us, what other career tracks might one take if they wanted to be considered.... evil?

Elizabeth gives Jane a sharp look, lips parted, the words she would typically say sticking in her throat.

"The loneliness."

"I had already achieved maximum evilness. Further training would have been redundant and irrelevant. No residency, not even a fellowship. The goal of any evil person should be all-encompassing evil, not specialized evil. That's for lawyers."

Also my evil medical degree is fake."

Beat.

"What? Who said that? Come back here so I can dip you in mag-ma."

He purses his lips.

"There aren't enough evil baristas. Yeah. Or evil llama farmers. You should do that."

"It was stupid and reckless to climb the mountain pass in a blizzard and take on the elemental, Old Chitral, by myself, but I wouldn't call it a mistake. I won the Dominion Jewel and presented it to Jonathan. With it, he secured his throne and repaired the very ground beneath our feet when Roger attempted to ruin us all."

She chews on her lip.

"Not saving Francis from the Sweating Fever when I had all the power to do so was my stupidest mistake and greatest regret, but his death was no best possible outcome. Unless one considers that it made me determined not to make the same mistake with Jon."

There's a long pause.

"With that in mind, I have to say bringing my brother back to life. I shouldn't have done it. It was stupid, and the Gods might yet punish me further." Firmly: "But he's alive, and that I would not change."

Grace takes a long drag on her cigarette, tapping a finger on the table and nodding as if to say: Sure. I see what you're doing.

"There was this case. B&E, multiple homicide over in Eastside. It was a family with a teenage boy, dog." She shakes her head. "It got to me, you know? After everyone left, I stayed. I looked through photo albums, poured some whiskey into a half-empty pitcher of iced tea, played tapes. Fell asleep on their couch, reading the dad's old travel diary. Something woke me up. A picture fell off the wall. No -- it was knocked off. Had to have been. Behind it was a loose board. Behind the board was a letter that helped me catch the killer."

She grins.

"Nah. That'd be too easy. But I swear I saw a woman-shaped shadow standing there, still as anything. I stared until it vanished. Just... gone.

"Nothing another drink couldn't fix."
